DATA & KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

MSNC 507 / Statistical Article Presentation

The final module of the biostatistics course focused on identifying a journal article relevant to our professional field and presenting to the class how statistics, particularly at least one of the statistical techniques covered during the course, was used to effectively address a research question.

Throughout the course, we acquired knowledge on how to describe data using graphs and descriptive statistics, basic probability concepts, common probability distributions, and different inferential statistical methods such as t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear and multiple regressions. By learning how and when to apply particular statistical methods given research questions and types of data, we were able to choose an article with a subject and statistical method that we were interested in.

The article I chose was entitled, “Effects of Preparatory Education on Nursing Students’ Anxiety”, which aimed to examine the effect of clinical preparatory education given to nursing students on their anxiety levels and analyze the findings with the use of t-tests. In addition to the research findings, we performed calculations using Excel to interpret output and effectively present the article’s findings through text and tables. We utilized knowledge learned throughout the course to review the scientific manuscript and explain the results critically. Components of the presentation included Background, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Limitations/Future research.

This project meets the Data and Knowledge Management Outcome in that students were tasked to utilize knowledge of medical terminology, spreadsheet development, data management, statistical analysis, and selection of statistical tools to evaluate a problem. We demonstrated skills in the use of data management software and applied selected statistical methodologies learned throughout the course to evaluate our articles.
