Throughout the Financial Management in Health Care Systems course, we explored the financial environment of the health care industry and how it specifically affects the role of the health care leader. Each learning module evaluated the development of financial analysis skills to provide a foundation for application to our final project. The final project of this course required us to create a strategic business proposal to obtain funding for a product or service of our choice for a primary care organization, Heartland Health. The proposal comprised of several components which were submitted in an iterative process, allowing us to implement our instructor’s feedback throughout the course.
The proposal had a total of six components plus an Executive Summary. The first component was dedicated to the Economic Climate introduction, where we described the historical and current economic climate that pertains to healthcare as described during lecture. The Products and Services assignment required us to select a specific product for our proposal based on our research. We then performed an organizational analysis of the fictional Heartland Health in the Organization, Productivity, and Labor component, which included the productivity and cost of doing business, RVU development, a one-month expense budget, and one-month productivity report. The last assignments included the management overview for the Leadership assignment, and a financial summary (including revenue, expenses, capital, and volume projections) for the Finance assignment, and a marketing strategy for the Marketing assignment.
This proposal meets the Leadership and Systems Management outcome as we are able to demonstrate the ability to interpret and apply health related financial statements to the development of a health care financial plan. We were presented with a case scenario for Heartland Health and tasked to create a strategic business proposal based on Heartland Health’s needs using the leadership principles and strategic planning concepts learned in class.
