LEADERSHIP & SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT

ENLC 553 / Elevator Speech

The first part of our Financial Management in Health Care Systems final project was a written strategic business proposal to obtain funding for a product for a primary care organization, Heartland Health. The proposal addressed Heartland Health’s main objectives and health needs, population served, geographical location, and current staffing. This multi-component proposal was arranged and concluded with a concise executive summary. The second part of the final project was to create a video, dressed in business casual attire, giving a 60-second “elevator pitch” of the most compelling points from the executive summary.

In the elevator pitch, students were to imagine having a chance encounter with the chief executive officer of Heartland Health in which they had the opportunity to pitch their product or service proposal. The video was to include an introduction (including name and position), a brief description of the product being proposed, an explanation of how the selected product fits into the overall strategic plan of the organization, and key information of the financial summary. Optional topic points, if time was allotted, included the historic and current economic climate and the organizational analysis.

In preparation for this assignment, we were provided with several resources regarding elevator pitches. These resources included links to several award-winning elevator pitch videos and articles serving as communication and critical thinking tools. Upon completion, we posted our videos to the Discussion Board for peer review.

Throughout the strategic business proposal and elevator pitch assignment, students were able to apply concepts of ethical leadership principles for solving health care system issues and applied concepts of strategic planning learned from lecture and readings. By utilizing concepts of change management theory, we presented organizational and system changes for Heartland Health.
