QUALITY & REGULATORY

ENLC 556 / Quality Tools and Techniques Presentation

The ENLC 556 course focused on evaluation of patient safety and quality of care outcomes from a systems perspective, allowing students to explore theoretical and methodological foundations for understanding and applying quality patient outcomes within the current health care environment.

Throughout the course, students reviewed safety applications in other high-risk industries with application to nursing and the healthcare industry with an emphasis on identification, implementation, and evaluation of quality indicators for patient safety and other patient outcomes. Learning about various quality tools and techniques allowed students to address the role of leadership in error prevention and management of a culture of patient safety.

This two-person assignment required students to select one of many quality tools or techniques and create a presentation reviewing the methodology as a whole. Swim Lane Diagram was chosen as our quality tool topic for its functionality and effectiveness. We were tasked create a presentation to discuss with adequate depth and scope: how to use the given tool, potential purposes and benefits, general key points and technical terms, and examples of application within healthcare.

Reviewing these quality methodologies allowed students to meet the criteria of the Quality and Regulatory Outcome by demonstrating knowledge of methods for design of quality programs and/or performance improvement as applied to the healthcare field. Topics presented included tools which evaluate both human and technological systems.
