QUALITY & REGULATORY

HCIN 544 / Advanced Clinical Decision Support Presentation

The Advanced Health Care Information Management course provided information and skills necessary for informatics roles in health care systems with an emphasis on design of electronic health record (EHR) systems and regulatory and quality issues in healthcare informatics.

The advanced clinical decision support (CDS) presentation required students to pick a quality clinical metric to create a CDS support rule for an evidenced based practice issue. Students were required to research a chosen metric or guideline, design the most appropriate method for CDS, describe at what point in the EHR workflow the CDS should occur, indicate how it should look, describe which outcomes the CDS will address, and indicate how effectiveness of the CDS could be measured.

I chose to create a CDS alert pop-up related to alerting clinicians when Diabetic patients were due for Hemoglobin A1c testing. After reviewing recommended testing frequencies, I then had to decide what type of alert it would be, when and where it would be most appropriate to appear in the EHR, and how outcomes could be measured.

This assignment supports the Quality and Regulatory Outcome as students had to design their own CDS within an EHR and describe tools in which to evaluate these systems. Application of these systems were intended to ensure patient safety while maintaining privacy and EHR security.
