SYSTEMS DESIGN & MANAGEMENT

HCIN 550 / DMAIC Project

Health Care Six Sigma (Green Belt) employed the structured Lean Six Sigma “DMAIC” methodology and Lean: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control; introducing principles, tools, and techniques to teach students how to improve processes and eliminate waste within a health care organization. These methodologies were described for students to be able to apply the Six Sigma models to healthcare systems and to successfully develop, launch, and transition a project through each phase.

To begin the process, we observed a simulation of a healthcare scenario. Using the simulation observations and timepoints, our team decided on the major root causes of waste. After the root cause analysis, we were able to create a Current State Process Map, a Value Stream Map, and come up with recommendations to address specific causes to critical flaws found in the processes. With the solutions in place, our group then put together our project proposal using Lean Six Sigma DMAIC.

For the Define phase, we identified our critical success factors, in scope/out of scope, and created our Project Charter outlining our goal statement and project team. Our current state process map, value stream map, and measurement methods were described for the Measurement phase. Visual aids, including bar graphs and a Pareto chart, were shown to demonstrate our understanding of statistical analysis and the Analyze phase. Improvement and Control summaries concluded our presentation of the DMAIC process.

Our application of Six Sigma and root cause analysis to the failed system observed in the simulation meets the Systems Design and Management Outcome. We evaluated the simulation facility’s system design, applied a workflow analysis, and proposed integration of a new and improved workflow.
